Birth, death, transition, departure–the grand, mysterious and often heartbreaking circle of life. Loss means different things to each of us, and we experience loss in a million different ways. Nothing can diminish its significance; time heals but we never forget. Grief is natural and healthy–research shows that the cultures which wholeheartedly experience loss, stiff upper lip be damned, heal faster. Memories will gradually and gently replace pain, and as hard as it is to believe at the time, life goes on.
Friends offer sanctuary, sanity, guidance, compassion, loyalty, honesty and honor. Whether years-long or brand new, trust is instantaneous. We revel in the good times, survive the bad. We stand beside each other because we know each other’s secrets. Where would we be without our friends (or what I call family of choice)!
