Heart & Soul

Exclusive to Wimberley Keepsakes, my energizing WishCatchers are a new take on an ancient tradition. I made my first WishCatcher when my band, Sugar Bayou, began work on our CD, “Lucky Life”–would #3 be a charm? Musicians need all they luck they can get, so I created a reminder for myself.

When I was six, I “borrowed” my brother’s toy pony and kept it with me everywhere. Each night at dinner, I would ask my parents for a horse. They would consider my request, then–predictably–say no. I was not to be dissuaded; after a year of politely putting forward my unreasonable request (suburban Houston is unsuited to raising horses), they said yes. I had kept my eye on the prize, minded my manners, and never stopped believing. The reward: first horse, first love. It’s about patience, focus, intentionality, fighting less than favorable odds.

I put the toy to good use by coercing barbed wire into a heart shape, weaving a web within, and adding symbols such as luck, faith, love–and that pony. WishCatchers were born.

Although I assign my own meaning to the symbols in each design, WishCatchers are made so that the recipient can easily draw her/his own interpretation. When I make one, I envision someone who might need something: love, healing, luck, forgiveness, remembrance, faith, acceptance, joy, peace, support, a prayer, inspiration, a reminder–the tangible equivalent of a helping hand. Each WishCatcher comes with a message explaining the meaning. They are one-of-a kind, but each category can be approximated.

Some are bright and colorful, others earthy and spare. I make custom WishCatchers, and among the most requested are those purposed for women fighting breast cancer, with healing and hope guiding the design. They’re offered so that the recipient will know she is in someone’s heart and prayers. I donate 20% of those sales (and all pink-themed merch) to The Avon Foundation to honor the fight.
